But it is also history, art and culture. Among the most significant places to visit are the alleys of the “Pigna”, the characteristic medieval historic center founded around the year 1000; the Russian Church of 1913 and nearby
Promenade of the Empress dedicated to Tsarina Maria Alexandrovna, who stayed in Sanremo and donated palm trees for the seafront to the city (today the palm is, together with the lion, the symbol of Sanremo); the 12th century church of San Siro, in Romanesque-Gothic style; the sanctuary of the Madonna della Costa, which dominates the city from above; Palazzo Borea d’Olmo, home to the Civic Museum; Villa Nobel, Villa Zirio, Villa Ormond and its gardens and the Art Nouveau villas of Corso degli Inglesi, built by aristocratic Anglo-Saxon families between the 19th and 20th centuries.
Among the attractions of the city of Sanremo the most famous is certainly the Casino, but for those who do not like gambling and prefer sport there are the Yacht Club, which organizes various sailing regattas, the Circolo Golf Degli Ulivi, founded in the Thirties, or the brand new cycle path of Ponente Ligure, which runs along the sea and unites the municipalities between Ospedaletti and San Lorenzo al Mare.
Ideal places for a walk are the old port and the delightful Piazza Bresca, the Portosole tourist port and, for those who love shopping, the most elegant street in the city: Corso Matteotti, with the famous Cinema Ariston, home of the Sanremo Festival.
An excellent opportunity for shopping is the market, every Tuesday and Saturday morning, in Piazza Eroi Sanremesi, where the Torre Saracena or Torre della Ciapela is located.
Other recommended activities for spending free time on the Riviera are Whale watching and excursions to the villages of the Ligurian hinterland where, on the occasion of the numerous summer food and wine festivals, it is possible to taste the typical products of the region and taste wines known throughout Italy such as, for example, the Rossese of Dolceacqua.
Among the most beautiful villages to visit: Bussana Vecchia, destroyed by an earthquake in 1887 and now a village of artists and poets; Taggia, the town of the famous Taggiasca olive; Triora, the “town of witches”; the medieval village of Apricale and that of Dolceacqua, with the Doria Castle and the old bridge which Claude Monet defined as “a jewel of lightness”.
On the coast, the Botanical Gardens of Villa Hanbury and the “i Balzi Rossi” Museum with finds from the Paleolithic era (in Ventimiglia) and the municipalities neighboring Sanremo are worth visiting: Ospedaletti and Bordighera, Arma di Taggia, Riva Ligure and Santo Stefano at the sea.
